What?

The Jade Coast Discovery (JCD) program is a new Therapeutic wilderness program for troubled teens (13-18 years) that combines change base counselling with our leading edge outdoor curriculum.

Through an experiential education program we support the development of mind, body and spirit, and the skills and attitudes for improved family functioning and pro-social living. We are committed to ensuring that all our services operate in a manner, which places the safety and security of our students, staff and community as first priority.

So What? :

Our programs use an ancient wilderness adventure camp format to teach outdoor skills and academic curriculum. Our programming also provides in-depth opportunities for personal growth work in the areas of self-esteem, interpersonal relations, and the development of positive behavior patterns for the long-term.

Over the duration of our 30 day Program, students will embark on self propelled expeditions in the region of varying length and difficulty. Based from our Outdoor Centre students will earn academic credit for course work completed during the program.

Jade Coast offers Journeys in four modes; Sea Kayak, Big Canoe, Trekking and keel boat Sailing. Journeys programs venture to some of the most remote and beautiful locations ion the Upper Sunshine Coast.

The Jade Coast Discovery program is an opportunity for people to challenge themselves, develop new life skills and put together a success plan that will help them work through life’s challenges.

At Jade Coast Discovery, each troubled teen is unique and therefore requires a customized approach. A 30-day wilderness adventure Journey allows the appropriate time for groups to really form and for each individual to find a positive role that they can incorporate into their personality on a long-term basis.

Now What?

For youth who will be returning to their usual environment following the wilderness program, the 30-day Journey offers the best chance at success. Research has indicated that shorter therapeutic wilderness programs for teens can create short-lived changes that are often overcome by pressures that await them upon return home. Maintaining progress is a challenging task for most at-risk youth. The 30-day Journey program helps with that task. Our After care program links with School and community supports to ensure the best chance for students.

This program is a community based program, with partnership support from School District #47, Powell River.
