Ecology & Adventure Learning Unit #2

Rocks Rock!  (And a other cool geo stuff!)

Ever notice that whenever you dig, you come up with rocks?  Ever notice the wide variety of rocks you can find on our beaches?  In this unit we learn about the different kinds of rocks that are here, where they have come from, and where they are going.  Erosion, weathering, earthquakes, and the build up of our great coastal mountain ranges are also covered in this unit.   Big rocks, little rocks, rocks on top of rocks!

MAXIMUM 8 LEARNERS.

Thursday mornings, November 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th

9:00am-12:00pm   /   $152/learner + HST   /  Grades 3+

Our previous programs have included:

  • Forest Ecology: explore how a forest functions, from the rich understory to the towering canopy and everything in between.  We review plants and animals commonly found in our temperate rainforest and discover how they interact and need each other to survive. This program takes place at our Outdoor Adventure Centre located south of town at Herondell B&B.
  • Survival Skills: learn how to survive alone in the woods from a few hours to a few days.  We learn how to build good shelters, fire pits, fires, solar stills (for water collection), and also how to keep warm and dry, how to forage for food, how to read maps and compasses, and how to prepare for being in the woods.  We take a look at the gear needed for being safely in the bush (i.e. a survival kit). This program takes place at our Outdoor Adventure Centre located south of town at Herondell B&B.
  • Fresh Water Ecology: explore the different forms of freshwater, from streams to ponds, to rivers, to estuaries where fresh and salt water meet.  This program takes place at our Outdoor Adventure Centre located south of town at Herondell B&B.
  • Marine Ecology: explore how the different zones interact, from the high tide line to the deep sea.  Learn the commonly found critters and plants in our area, as well as how they depend upon each other for survival, and how we depend on them for our survival too!  Program Location: TBD.
  • Coastal Kayaking Program: explore our coastline and all the wonderful critters along it as we head out for a few hours in double kayaks.  Basic kayaking skills will be taught at the beginning of the session. Program Location: TBD.
  • Mitlenatch Island Exploration: Explore the wonders of the unique ecosystem of Mitlenatch Island, an anomaly in the Strait of Georgia.  It's position has created a semi-arid island of immense beauty and ecological value - there are plants that grow on Mitlenatch that you just don't find anywhere else along the coast!  This program will leave from Lund, travel to Mitlenatch via Zodiac, and return to Lund.
